Welcome to West Oakland OB/GYN!
We are pleased you have chosen our practice to meet your medical needs and are delighted to get to know you! Please use this website to learn about our practice and procedures. We also have included some basic information about obstetric care and common gynecology topics.
Dr. Gruskin is on staff at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak and performs surgery and delivers babies out of Beaumont. Our office manager is Zara Redner and our financial manager is Erika. Our receptionists are Mindy, Adrianna, and Kayla. Malva and Ellie are our medical assistants and Lisa is our surgical scheduler. Office hours are Monday through Thursday from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, and Friday from 8:30 am to 3:00 pm. Our phones turn off at the time we close, and we listen to voicemails the morning of the next business day. When scheduling an appointment, please let our receptionist know the nature of your visit. We will try to see urgent visits within a few days or may refer you for emergent care if needed. For well woman physicals (annual exams), Dr. Gruskin and Dr. Portney will alternate care yearly. Please bring any recent test results to your appointment so that we may review them with you. Please note that Dr Gruskin's schedule is limited due to her being the only physician in the office that does ultrasounds, surgeries and deliveries. This may make scheduling with her a little more difficult at times but she trusts her partner Dr. Portney to see her patients and evaluate their needs.
Please have your insurance information available when scheduling appointments and bring your card to the office with you at the time of your appointment. It is helpful if you are familiar with your insurance and the coverage it provides as some plans do not cover well women care i.e. Annual exams. Medicare will cover such exams every 2 years in most cases. While we recommend a yearly gynecologic checkup, in many cases your pap smear may safely be done less frequently. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to ask the receptionist for extra time to be allotted to your appointment and bring a list of questions to your appointment.
Please feel free to call us during office hours for any medical concerns or questions. No question is too silly to ask and we would prefer to hear from you than have you worry or "surf the web" for medical care. Please know that the staff is familiar with basic obstetric and gynecology protocols and can answer the majority of questions. If your issue is complex and requires physician attention, you are often better served by making an office visit and we will help accommodate you promptly to discuss your options.
We do offer an answering service for emergencies when the office is closed. An "on call" physician will be paged to assist you. Do know that this call will take the physician away from her personal family time. Please respect us and call only if you are contemplating emergency room care. If you have concerns about our on call protocol, please visit the on call page, or call our office. Please refer to the obstetrics page on this website for medications to use for pregnancy. A charge may be applied if your call is deemed non-emergent at the physician's discretion.
For prescription refills, please allow 48 hours notice for routine refills. Please update us on any new medications or allergies. Most yearly prescriptions already have a year's worth of refills so check with your pharmacist directly.
If you are more than 15 minutes late to your appointment, we may need to reschedule your appointment. Our appointment times are important to us, as we always try to see you in a timely fashion and make it fair to all other patients. We request 24 hours for non emergent cancellation. A no-show fee of $50.00 will be applied to all patients who fail to keep their appointment time, or do not give proper notice of a cancellation. This is to ensure that we are not wasting high demand appointment slots. If you are a new patient, we request that you have your paperwork completed before you come in, and arrive ten minutes prior to your appointment time. We will email these to you with the email provided at the time of making the appointment. If you are planning on doing your paperwork in our office we request that you come 25-30 minutes prior to your appointment time to complete these before your appointment starts.
